Charting the Depth
As we take another quick buzz around the camp scene, some holes going into the season are starting to get filled a bit.
Starting in Norman, where the Oklahoma Sooners are recovering from the stupidity of Rhett Bomar and JD Quinn, former starter and current wide receiver Paul Thompson gets the starting nod by head coach Bob Stoops. That, according to the Houston Chronicle. Thompson gets the unenviable task of trying to restore confidence to the offense and take some pressure off RB Adrian Peterson, who can be a bit fragile. Also, looking at the 13 first place votes the Sooners received in the pre-season USA Today poll, it was done before Bomar's and Quinn's dismissal.
Next to sunny Los Angeles, where the lucky one that replaces Reggie Bush appears to be Chauncey Washington, so says the registration-locked Los Angeles Times. Washington is the leader of a deep depth chart that grows deeper with Desmond Reed opening with a solid non-contact practice Thursday. Reed is coming off a knee injury. Rotoworld gets direct credit for this.
To Athens next and Georgia Bulldog camp. The race to replace QB D.J. Shockley appears not to be quite settled yet. Head coach Mark Richt looks to be heading to a quarterback rotation, (for the love of God, why?). The Macon Telegraph explores this issue some more and has some quotes from touted freshman QB Matthew Stafford and none from incumbent QB Joe Tereshinski.
The Washington Post(registration required) has a good piece on the quarterback situation at both Virginia and Virginia Tech. Virginia will go with Notre Dame transfer Christian Olson under center, while the Hokies have penciled in sophomore Sean Gannon to replace troubled Ron Mexi...Marcus Vick. Fellow redshirt sophomore Cory Holt was thought to have the edge before camp started. Redshirt freshman Ike Whitaker sits solidly in third.
Finally to Oxford, Miss. Quarterback Brent Schaffer has finished his required course work and is ready to get his baptism by fire in the SEC at Ole Miss. The Memphis Commercial-Appeal relates Schaffer's first day on campus.
