ITB's Campus Tour - August 17th
As fall camps continue there are a lot of small news and notes from around the college football world. First we will start with the story that will never end...seriously. Two days earlier we thought Willie Williams had found a home but today we find out that is not the case. Pearl River Community College has decided not to admit former Miami linebacker. Wildcats coach Tim Hatten explained that a few of the reasons that Williams was not admitted were not his (Williams') fault. I think the only thing left to do for will is to go back to Miami and beg for Larry Coker's forgiveness. Williams could spend a year on the scout team and work his way back up the depth chart.
In Minnesota they are still looking for a running back. With the loss of Gary Russell earlier in the year to academic issues, head coach Glen Mason was hoping that Junior College transfer Brylee Callender could help pick up some of the slack. Yesterday Callender was suspended indefinitely from the Gopher team for violating team rules. It is not clear how long or what the team rules he violated were. Amir Pinnix is the starter right now heading into the season.
It is hard this time of the year to get any news from teams except injuries, but this next piece of news is even more difficult to write about then the injuries. An assistant coach at Air Force has been suspended for hitting a player. Offensive line coach Pete Hurt is the coach and it is stated that he was trying to impress something on the player. Whatever that means. There is no room for these actions in football or anywhere. Coaches are people the players are suppose to look up to and be fatherly figures while they are away from home. The name of the player involved has not been revealed.
Even though he was benched half way through last season Arkansas Razorback coach Houston Nutt is giving Robert Johnson a second chance. Johnson has been named the started at QB for the opening game Sept 2. against USC. In 2005, Johnson threw for 876 yards, 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Freshman Casey Dick will be the backup.
Finally, even though I don't like to post news I have heard on message boards, I am confident this this one is true and will write about it. Austin Scott, who filled in for Tony Hunt, during Penn State's 3OT victory over Florida State in the Orange Bowl last year, has sprained his ankle. His status right now is unknown. There has been much speculation about if Scott should redshirt or not and this might play into the decision process. Both Hunt and Scott are seniors, but a redshirt would give Scott the upper hand on the starting job next year. If he doesn't redshirt he will be most likely be coming in for mop-up duty or only if Hunt gets injured this season.
