The
University of Oklahoma has announced that two players have been kicked off of the football team for "extra compensation above that to which they were entitled related to their employment at a private business. This is a direct violation of NCAA rules."
ESPN.com citing reports from
KWTV in Oklahoma City has learned that one of the two players is Sooner starting QB Rhett Bomar. In the University's statement head coach Bob Stoops was quoted as saying: "I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values." Starting Guard D.J. Quinn has been named as the other Sooner dismissed according to
ESPN.com.
Bomar set a University of Oklahoma freshman record passing for 2,018 yards and 10 Touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2005. Junior College transfer Joey Halzle is listed as Bomar's backup, but has never taken a snap during a Division 1 game. There is a chance that former Sooner QB Paul Thompson could be moved back to QB from his starting WR spot. Thompson started 2005 as the QB before losing his job to Bomar during Game 2.
Quinn played in all 11 games for the Sooners in 2005, starting 4 at right guard. Redshirt freshman Brian Simmons is listed as his backup.
