BYU is riding high coming into this game as they have won nine straight this year and swept through the MWC for their first league title in five years. But lately they have been having trouble in the bowl games as they have lost their last four. The Cougars are lead by QB John Beck who has thrown for over 3500 yards with 30 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Beck's favorite target is ITB's All American Tight End Jonny Harline who has 754 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. Curtis Brown gives the Cougars a decent threat at running back.
BYU lost two of their first three games to Boston College and Arizona but rebounded to score 31 points against a tough TCU defense. So we know that scoring points will not be a problem in this game for BYU. Oregon comes into the game on a 3 game losing streak. This was once a team that was ranked near the top 10 but has fallen in the past month. Their biggest win was a controversial one against the Oklahoma Sooners, that most of us agree by now should have never happened. The Ducks have a talented QB in Dennis Dixon and a tough, yet speedy, running back in Jonathan Stewart who almost eclipsed the 1000 yard mark and scored 10 TDs.
The thing that scares me about the Ducks is their ability to stop anyone but I guess the same can be said for BYU. Both teams average over 400 yards of total offense but give up over 300 yards. Although the Cougars seem to be a little bit better against the run than the pass. This is definitely going to be a game for people who love offense. I can foresee over 800 yards of offense and 70 combined points scored. Earlier in the year I sang the praises of Dixon and Stewart as a great 1-2 combo but they really let me down against Cal and USC. And it looks like they have given up on this season. I like any team that rides an impressive winning streak over a team that comes in on a losing streak. It will be Beck to Harline all night. BYU 42-24.
