8-4 (4-3), 4th Big East
vs
7-5 (5-3), 2nd Conference USA - East
South Florida is starting to make a name for itself in college football. This is the 2nd consecutive year the Bulls have finished 4th in the Big East and gone to a bowl game. Head Coach Jim Leavitt is one of the hottest head coaches in college football right now, but he is committed to making the Bulls a better team. Which shouldn't be as hard as most think since they reside in one of the deepest places for high school recruits.
Last season South Florida knocked off Louisville and this season they spoiled West Virginia's chances for a BCS bowl by beating them in Morgantown. They are lead by a very talented Freshman Quarterback Matt Grothe who can just as well beat you with his legs and arm. He is the Bulls' leading passer with 2495 yards passing and 14 touchdowns, as well as their leading rusher with 607yards rushing and 9 touchdowns. Their defense is lead by ITB's defensive freshman of the year DE George Selvie and DB Trae Williams with his 7 interceptions on the year.
East Carolina is back in a bowl game for the first time since 2001. The Pirates only game against a ranked team was a 27-10 loss to West Virginia early in the season. Their QB James Pinkney has put up some very nice numbers throwing for 2658 yards with 11 touchdowns. But like this counterpart Grothe, they both have only 1 more touchdown than interception.
The Pirates rely on a running back by committee as Brandon Fractious, Chris Johnson, and the QB James Pinkney all share carries. All three players each have 4 rushing TDs but Fractious has the most rushing yards with 675.
This game has the potential to be a sloppy one as far as turnovers go. As I said before South Florida is a little more battle tested playing teams like WVU, Louisville, and Rutgers, who they only lost by 2 points. The key to this game will be, how well does the Freshman Matt Grothe play. If he takes care of the ball this game should fall in the hands of the Bulls, but a few turnovers early could have the Pirates tasting victory. In their 3 meetings when South Florida was a member of Conference USA, the Bulls won all three. That will not change even though they are in a different conference. South Florida 27-14.
