Soap Opera West Virginia Style

The never ending, I am not interested, now I am interested saga of Moutaineer Coach Rich Rodriguez seems to have taken another turn this week. As we recall last Friday, Rich Rod called in a local radio station and made the statement that he was not leaving, adding that he would be the coach at West Virginia next year. Great news for WVU fans. That eased the tensions surround the big Rutgers game and the Mountaineers pulled out a 3OT victory. Now we learn that yesterday Mr. Rodriguez had a face to face meeting with some officials from Alabama. This meeting lasted about 45 minutes and I am pretty sure they were not discussing WVU's game plan against Georgia Tech. So why would a man that told his fans, employers, and alumni that he was staying even meet with a school that could potentially pay him $3 million a year? That last little bit says it all. Rodriguez is trying to force WVU's hand to pay him and his staff more money after two seasons where the Mountaineers have lost a combined 3 games. Rodriguez also wants more of a commitment from the school for better facilities, so why not use this as a bargaining chip? The meetings was explained to be an informal one not talking about anything remotely resembling an offer to coach the Crimson Tide. But something had to have come out of that meeting because the Tide are going to be spending the next 72 hours deciding on if they want to offer Rodriguez the job or not. So I guess we will find out in the next few days the fate of this coach. Will he stick by his word and stay or just become another talking head looking for a bigger paycheck?
