What did we learn on Saturday?
We are starting to get to that part of the season where the great teams start to separate from the good teams. If you look at some of the teams in the top 25 they have played 6 games and are already half way through there season. I got to watch a lot games and I will tell you all what I learned during the 6th week of college football.
The California Bears have a 50/50 shot in beating USC and winning the Pac 10 this year. Southern Cal has not been all that impressive the last few weeks against Washington and Washington State. Most of it is due to injuries and not all of them will be ready when Cal comes to town. Cal has been highly impressive since their opening week loss at Tennessee and we've learned that Tennessee is a good team. The Bears embarrassed Arizona State and beat Oregon sound last night on National Television. It is certain that Nate Longshore and Marshawn Lynch are ready for the big time. DeSean Jackson should be talked about in the same breath as some of the other exciting sophomores in the country.
The Michigan at Ohio State matchup at the end of the season will determine half of the BCS championship game. I'm sorry Penn State fans but there is a very little or no chance that the Nittany Lions will be able to pull the upset over the Wolverines this Saturday night. Both teams should be able to win the rest of their games and face off in Columbus as undefeated teams. Michigan's offense is looking impressive now that the Henne/Manningham connection is in full force. Michael Hart keeps running through defenses for that run-pass balance. Ohio State has looked good beating everyone in their path but they have a little trouble defending the run. Their CB's are big, strong, and fast and can easily match up with any WR's in the country. It should be a great game.
Florida State could possibly finish the season 6-6. Every school seems to go through a few rough years. Oklahoma, USC, and Penn State have all experienced it and now the Seminoles are going through it. In their remaining 7 games, I only see 3 games that are for sure wins, Duke, Virginia, and Western Michigan. FSU cannot get any sort of rushing game going and that is translating over to a poor passing game, that's not even mentioning the predictability of their offensive playcalling. Coach Bowden will need to take a deep look at his staff and himself before spring ball if he wants to stop this slide half way down.
Florida will beat Georgia and Auburn on their way to the SEC Championship game. I am reluctant to say that Florida will play in the BCS Championship game because they have to play in that championship game. Right now the Gators are playing some of the best football in the country and when I put out my top 10 vote this week they will probably wind up at #2. It will be interesting to see next week's game at Auburn and to see if there is a let down on Florida's part and to see how the Tigers' respond after losing their first game against Arkansas and shattering their National Title hopes.
That's it for now. I will be back later with the rest of the stuff I've learned.
