The Picture Clears Up a Bit
As a football fan you had to be disappointed in the games yesterday. Neither of the games that involved matchups between two top 25 teams turned out to be anything special. Notre Dame capitalized on miscues and poor gameplanning to romp the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions better regroup fast because they have a trip to Columbus looming in two weeks.
As for Ohio State, they really impressed me. I knew their offense was good but it was their defense that stepped up and stole the show. First they cause a fumble as Texas is inside the 5 yards line and then they intercept a Colt McCoy pass early in the 2nd half. Both turnovers lead to touchdowns for the Buckeyes. Troy Smith wowed me with his passing as Ginn Jr did with his speed. Last year I saw Smith as a running QB, but the man has improved his passing and his shot to win the Heisman.
Two 330pm EST games went to OT. Iowa needed to stop Syracuse 7 times from inside the 2 yard line to hold on to a victory. If the Hawkeyes are going to challenge Ohio State for the Big 10 title, they need to get a lot better. Boston College blocked a Clemson extra point to win in overtime at home. Impressive win for Matt Ryan and the BC Eagles.
Tennessee has a rough time with Air Force. The Falcons only need to kick an extra point to send the game into overtime, decided to go for two but was stopped by the Vols defense. I call it a gutsy, not stupid, call by Air Force. California really put it to Minnesota and showed that last week's beating by the Vols was a fluke. Keeping in the Pac 10, the Oregon Ducks struggled but pulled out a victory against the Fresno State Bulldogs. That answered the question that a Duck can really beat a Bulldog in a fight.
Troy nearly pulled off the upset against Florida State but couldnt hold off a late surge by the Seminoles. In another close game the Texas Tech Red Raiders kicked a FG in OT to hold off the UTEP Miners.
