The Trojans Make a Statement Plus Other Weekend Comments
If you listened to the preseason prediction show, you will remember that everyone picked Ohio State to win the Big Ten and quite a few picked them to make the BCS Championship game. After the way they played against USC, I would love to poll those members again because I am pretty sure they wouldn't have them in the title game, and I bet we would also see some variety in the Big Ten Champion picks.
Todd Boeckman had a bad game, and he seems to always have a bad game at the worst possible time for the Buckeyes. Last year he didn't play well against Illinois and LSU, and Ohio State lost both of those. I bet we start seeing a lot more of Pryor in weeks to come.
USC looked dominate in every aspect of the game, and I really have to tip my hat to Mark Sanchez. He really has control out there and looked poised. Ray Maualuga leads a defense which is the best I have seen this year not only with their speed, but with their pursuit around the ball. With the way Oregon looked, California losing, and Arizona State losing, I think the gap between USC and the rest of the Pac-10 just got bigger.
Friday night was another good game between Kansas and South Florida. Todd Reesing brought his team back from a 14 point deficit in the 4th quarter to tie the game, but he threw a costly interception that led to the game winning field goal by the Bulls. My pick of USF to win the Big East is looking pretty good here.
I talked earlier about how USC's defense is the best I've seen, well Missouri's offense is the best offense I have seen this year. They scored 69 points this week against Nevada, and Chase Daniel had over 400 yards passing and and 4 touchdowns in only 28 attempts. The duo of Daniel and Jeremy Maclin might be the most dangerous QB-WR tandem in the country.
If you made it through the 3-2 Auburn/Mississippi State snooze fest, you are a true fan. That game set back offenses 30 years. Also, Georgia had a bit of a hiccup, but pulled out a 14-7 win over South Carolina.
Notre Dame was out gained but capitalized on a lot of Michigan mistakes to beat the Wolverines 35-17. The Irish did look better than last week, but in my opinion they are still a long ways away from a Top 20 team. Michigan...well I think they should just hope they make a bowl game this year.
Wisconsin didn't look great but they beat Fresno State. Allan Evridge did not have a great game, completing less than 50% of his passes, but what he did was not turn the ball over. P.J. Hill ran for 112 yards on 26 carries, but the Badgers should really be thankful to win this game. The Bulldogs' kicker, Kevin Goessling, was 1 for 4 in the game, missing a 33 yarder in the 4th quarter that would've tied the game.
I would be wrong if I didn't mention how impressed I was with the Tar Heels on Thursday night. They really stymied the Rutgers passing attack forcing Mike Teel to make a ton of mistakes. On offense, Brandon Tate was regularly getting behind the Rutgers' defensive backs, and after a slow start in the game T.J. Yates had a nice game.
