Tuesday Morning Linkage: Media Days

Written by In The Bleachers on .

We're in the last week of July and finally with the Conference Media Days there is some actual news and quotes which can hold us for a few weeks until fall camp starts.

What we've been working on:

In case you have not noticed, we are extremely happy to have Michael Felder join the ITB staff.  Michael, who was a former safety for the Tar Heels of North Carolina, produces the podcast From Mass to Miami and is also an ACC writer on the blog College Football Campus.  In the last week, Michael started a project looking at the Darkhorse teams of the ACC and Big East Conferences.

The In The Bleachers Podcast has been rolling along, previewing each conference for the 2009 season.  David Jones from the Harrisburg Patriot-News came on the show last week and gave his thoughts on the Big Ten.  This week's podcast, which should be ready by Thursday, will feature Jeremy Mauss from the Mountain West Connection.  Adam and I will have a lot to ask Jeremy, including why he thinks UNLV will be the darkhorse team of the Mountain West.

Adam continues his countdown of the Top 50 Non-BCS Players with who he calls the best quarterback in the history of the Sun Belt Conference.  Stay tuned to the countdown, I hear there are some BYU Cougars coming up on the list.

Finally, Ron Juckett sums up his thoughts on Army playing in Yankee Stadium and Kirk Ferentz getting a contract extension with Iowa, in his weekly column.

What we've been reading:

As I mentioned before, Media Days have started for conferences around the country.  At the SEC Media Days, AOL Fanhouse tells us that Steve Spurrier made headlines by not having Tim Tebow on his ballot, while Razorback Bloggers notes that Florida and Alabama were voted to play again in the SEC Championship game.

Future podcast guest Jeremy from the Mountain West Connection tabulates the Media's picks for the Mountain West.  The top 3 teams are TCU, BYU, and Utah, but Jeremy says watch out for UNLV.

The Big Ten has to be different and only releases their top 3 teams as voted by the media.  Those three teams are Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan State, but not in that order.  Check out the Big Ten press release for that information.

Husker Mike at Corn Nation published his ballot for the SB Nation all Big XII Team.  He and other Cornhusker fans should be happy as Nebraska was voted to win the North, while Texas edged out Oklahoma in the South voting.

Our favorite ESPN writer Bruce Feldman looks at the Top 10 Media Week Storylines.

The Daily Shillelagh has an interesting theory on the wake of Nate Montana (son of Joe Montana), transferring from Notre Dame to a Junior College and the other Montana, Nick, committing to Washington earlier this year.  Maybe Joe Montana doesn't think Charlie Weis is a good coach?

The Trojanwire points out that even the Gators think that USC is the team of this decade.

Finally, the ITB podcast with The Wiz of Odds sparked some thought about the subject of scheduling with Sam from Prolate Spheroid.  Sam takes a detailed look at the history of FBS schools playing FCS schools.
