In The Bleachers Podcast: Brian from BC Interruption Talks BC, ACC and Expansion

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBGot a great show as long time friend of the program, fellow ACC-ist and twitter buddy extraordinaire Brian from BC Interruption joins the program to talk all things ACC, Eagles and league expansion. Brian's got a wealth of knowledge and is just as thorough on air as he is over at BC Interruption so the show is damn good folks. We kick off by talking about BC's move from 2005 and while many folks still wonder how the Eagles fit into the ACC Brian assures me that their move to the ACC has been nothing but positive in terms of their athletic and financial stability.

Since the Eagles often are the most forgotten team in the ACC we jump right into BC's projections for the 2010 season. Although it is early the problems for the Eagles are clear as their passing game lost the leading receiver and they have a mini-QB controversy entering the season. One thing that is a known commodity is Montel Harris the running back who shredded the ACC to the tune of over 1,400 yards. On defense Spaziani's squad returns former ACC defensive player of the year Mark Herzlich from his battle with cancer and preseason All-American Luke Kuechly at the linebacker spot to anchor BC's always stingy defense.

When the talk turns to the ACC as a whole Brian talks about the Atlantic and how the three "frontrunners" Clemson, Florida State and Boston College all have deficiencies in some manner which should make for an interesting race. The positive news for the ACC is that no matter who wins the Atlantic and Coastal the Conference Championship Game will be in Charlotte and not in apathetic Florida. The North Carolina city, my hometown to be more specific, is a universally better location than Jacksonville and Tampa of previous years.

We wrap up with expansion and Brian hits on the reason why the Big Ten Network expansion move is a better deal than the SEC or ACC expansion that has been bandied about. Brian reminds us that anyone would be foolish not to at least entertain the idea of going to the Big Ten if offered a bid and that the Big Ten's model is the king, even if the conference's football doesn't stand up to the SEC's dominance.

Hoot & Holler Live! Talking Pac 10

Written by Michael Felder on .

Join us for this episode of Hoot & Holler Live! as Rob Harley and Michael Felder step up to give their thoughts on the Pac 10. Michael kicks off the preview by clueing the audience in that he is, in fact, a Lane Kiffin fan and thinks the young head coach will see plenty of success at Southern Cal. From there the guys get into the nuts and bolts of the new coaches, hot seats and predictions for the coming season.

Washington State gets an unexpected amount of time as Rob recalls playing the Cougars in 2002 and the boys talk about if firing Paul Wulff is going to help or hurt the program. With another bad season the boys in Pullman, WA could be looking at plucking a retread, inexperienced head coach or sticking with Wulff for yet another year. They've got quite a problem on their hands and the days of Drew Bledsoe and Ryan Leaf success seem light years away from where they are now.

Dennis Erickson gets his due as well since he's another coach who is starting to feel the heat. The Sun Devils rivals Arizona get taken to task by Rob for losing their DC and likely lacking the defense to make a legitimate run at the Pac 10 title.

The guys wrap up the show talking a little Justified and knocking out their extremely early predictions. Rob goes with the Ducks and you'll have to listen for Michael's surprising pick for Pac 10 champion (spoiler alert: they're smart).

In The Bleachers Podcast: Barrett Sallee from CFN stops by to talk SEC

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBOn this edition of the podcast we've got Barrett Sallee from College Football News on to talk about the league that seems to be the daddy of them all, the SEC. With spring football closing out in the south there is no better time to chat about the very early prospects of the league that has produced the last four BCS champions.

Sallee opens up talking about the SEC East and let's us know why the divisional race isn't as "wide open" as folks at South Carolina, Tennessee and UGA would like to believe. Between the inconsistent nature of South Carolina, Tennessee's quarterback uncertainty plus the UGA defensive and offensive question marks Florida is still the frontrunner in the East. Sallee stops me from dismissing the Kentucky Wildcats but Vandy is passed without fuss.

In the SEC West we get heavy into the unknowns surrounding LSU's quarterback problems, Ole Miss replacing all their production and Arkansas coming up with some form of a defense. Sallee makes a bold prediction that "all SEC West teams go to a bowl" and that includes Mullen and his Mississippi State Bulldogs. Barrett also drops the most hilarious quote in referencing what he thought about how Jarrett Lee played in 2008:

"A whole new spin on the definition of bad"

We wrap up talking expansion and why the SEC can pull any school they want in theory. Sallee also speculates that the SEC member units won't want to split the cash up so that may slow down rapid expansion.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Talking 2011 NFL Draft Early with Eric Galko from NFL House and the Optimum Scouting Department

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBWe know it is early folks but why not kick off the 2011 NFL Draft season with our draft expert Eric Galko from NFL House and the Optimum Scouting Department? That's right, fresh off the extravaganza that was the draft two weeks ago we bring Galko back in to kick off our 2011 NFL Draft breakdown. We're talking early, early, early big boards this show folks so get your fill of what could happen next season.

Before Galko and I get into the names and faces to look for in the 2011 class we touch on a fallen soldier from the 2010 pre-season drafthype machine, Jevan Snead. Galko hits on why it is tough to forecast quarterbacks, what made Snead's fall from grace to devastating and how the signal caller compounded things by deciding to skip his senior year.

After the humbling history lesson we push forward and Galko gives us his take on Robert Quinn, Da'Quan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn. All guys vying for the title of best DE in the 2011 draft class. Eric also hits on what separates Julio Jones from AJ Green and Michael Floyd in the 2011 wide receiver race. While the depth of the 2011 class is tremendous at the defensive tackle and safety position there are no players that rival Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy or Eric Berry in terms of top end talent.

Don't worry we hit on the quarterbacks as well as the quartet of Andrew Luck, Christian Ponder, Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker all are vying to become first rounders. The case for Locker is clear but Galko sheds some light on why Ryan Mallett could unseat the Husky as well as how the Jimbo Fisher system might end up hurting Christian Ponder's NFL Draft slot.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Michael Kelly the Associate Commissioner of Communications and Football Operations for the ACC drops by

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBThis Friday afternoon edition of the podcast features special guest Michael Kelly, the Associate Commissioner of Communications and Football Operations for the ACC. Kelly joins us to talk all things ACC as the league recently released tickets for the title game to the public and announced the prime time TV slot for the showdown in Charlotte.

We kick it off by talking about national perception of the ACC, discussing what the league needs to do to get a better foothold on the national stage. Winning is the obvious answer but Kelly touches on a few other steps the league must continue to take to remain strong athletically, financially and academically.

Our conversation moves to the ACC Championship Game which is now in my hometown of Charlotte, a place a lot of people truly feel it should stay for good. Kelly fills us in on some of the league's reasoning for starting in Florida as well as future plans for the ACC's grand finale.

We wrap up talking a little of expansion and why teams such as Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech should want to remain in the conference as opposed to seeking solace in the arms of the SEC. Kelly sheds a bit of light on the TV contract negotiations and how the ACC can work to better brand itself as an entity.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Andrew Garda of The Thundering Blurb Talks Big East and Expansion

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBOn this edition of the podcast we've got Andrew Garda from The Thundering Blurb here to talk about expansion from the Big East's point of view. All of the heat during these expansion discussions has centered around the Big Ten's move and then the necessary reactions of the Pac 10, SEC and ACC to stay afloat. Thus we decided to talk to a Big East guy about how the "doomed league" seems to view the inevitable.

Garda first talks about the league's "acquisition" of new consultant Paul Taglibue and how the former NFL commissioner can help increase their profitability. We then move on to discuss what measures the league can and must take to insure not just their short term life but their long term success. Randy Edsall and the Big East coaches "ultimatum" for Notre Dame is praised all around.

We also get into discussing how different scenarios could play out if the Big Ten decides to move to 16 teams. Garda agrees that culturally and competitively the ACC is a far better fit for Big East stalwarts such as Syracuse, UConn and Pitt but with both the Big East and ACC's second class role they might not be able to protect themselves. Then Garda and I start talking about the ACC-Big East mega conference that could attempt to stave off the elimination of both.

The interview wraps up with a little NFL talk as I get Andrew's take on Tebow and after three hours of radio in Denver he lets us know the pick got mixed reviews but that Tebow is absolutely a project quarterback.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Eric Galko from NFLHouse and the Optimum Scouting Department Recaps the NFL Draft

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBThe NFL Draft is over and we've got our draft analyst Eric Galko here to recap all of the action we just witness. Galko, from NFLHouse.com and The Optimum Scouting Department drops by to weigh in on the ups and downs of what was an exciting three days as college football collided with the NFL.

We kick it off by talking about Jimmy Clausen and his somewhat traumatic slide from first round jewel to second round steal at #48 to the Carolina Panthers. Galko sites Clausen's "attitude" issues as a  reason teams passed on the most pro ready quarterback in the NFL Draft. The slight slide of Golden Tate is addressed as well as the unforeseen plummeting of Jonathan Dwyer. Going from possible first rounder to sixth rounder was a remarkable happening but the Steelers are getting a steal in Dwyer.

The Tebow fiasco will be examined from multiple angles as the value of the project quarterback is weighed against the picks the Ravens received. Tebow is for sure a project and his status in Denver will be hotly contested until he either:

1) Proves he can play quarterback at the NFL level

2) He proves he can't

We talk about the Tar Heels taken in the draft as both EJ Wilson and Cam Thomas are headed to situations that could see them playing early and often. EJ in Seattle will be a quick contributor to the Seahawks run defense under Pete Carroll while Cam Thomas will help anchor San Diego's 3-4 attack.

The show ends on a "fun" note as just like the draft we almost get to the end without mentioning Jevan Snead. Yes, the undrafted quarterback from Ole Miss who started the season as a top ten prospect before spiraling out of control during Ole Miss' free fall.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Adam Kramer from Kegs N Eggs Talks NFL Mock Draft

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITB PodcastOn this episode of the show we've got twitter pal Adam Kramer from the website Kegs N Eggs on to go all out on the NFL Draft coverage. We kick the show off talking about value and the ridiculous idea that you can't take one of the best overall players in the draft before the fifth pick because of his position *cough Eric Berry cough*. An out of date ideal that we've seen the evolution of the safety position and the impending rookie payscale hopefully wipeout.

Then we get into the nuts and bolts of the draft mock as Kramer runs down his predictions for the draft coming on Thursday. Your fearless leader Michael Felder poses a few questions as the run down is given posturing openly if Denver is willing to go with another "diva-esque" receiver in Dez Bryant and if Rolando McClain can really fall all the way to the Giants.

Of course there will be Tebow talk as the Jaguars are slated to trade down by many mock drafts, Kramer's not included though. Do the Jags really trade down to the get "hometown" hero or does another team, perhaps the Vikings, use their pick on Tebow later in the draft.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Eric Galko from NFL House and the Optimum Scouting Department

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBOn this episode of the In The Bleachers podcast we've got our NFL Draft expert Eric Galko in the house to run through the draft in its final hours. We take some time to discuss Need Based vs Best Player Available drafting strategies before we get to the heart of the matter, Galko's mock draft.

We only run through the first ten picks on a by pick basis so that Eric can really hit on the most hotly debated topics; Bradford, Clausen, McCoy, Suh and Okung all get highlighted in his top ten and we spend some time talking Eric Berry. Galko has the Volunteer safety going at five, something that sits well with your trusty host although seeing Berry in the pewter of the Bucs would make me happier.

Check out Galko's whole mock draft here and be ready to check out his final mock Wednesday. We also discuss the merits of several other draft associated issues such as the offensive tackles, wide receiver and defensive tackle classes and their strength. Cam Thomas gets a nod as a Heel who will likely be the first to go from UNC.
