ESPN Williamsport Talking Top 25

Written by Michael Felder on .

Tyrann MathieuToday I got a shot to join Trevor Turner on ESPN Williamsport to talk a little college football. Love getting a chance to talk with him and this was no different as we got a shot to talk about the Top 25 in solid fashion. Trevor had my Blogpoll out and we not only talked about the Coaches and AP poll but the BLOGPOLL WHA-WHAT! and where teams stand at this point in the season. We hit on LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma as football teams in everyone's Top 3. LSU vs Bama as number one is an interesting discussion as we differ on our philosophies of who should be the top team in college football.

Of course, being in Pennsylvania we get to the Penn State part of the discussion and it is not quite pretty. The Nittany Lions are coming off a 16-10 ugly victory over Indiana where despite putting up 464 yards of offense and 22 first downs the game was never truly in their control because of their three turnovers. The quarterback situation, the inability to have any true direction is becoming a real issue and until the folks in State College can remedy those problems will be tough to move to the upper echelon of the Big Ten landscape.

Friday, It's So Fetch! Vol. 21

Written by Michael Felder on .

Friday, Fetch Friday, we're getting so fetch on Friday! South Florida just did their annual "we is so for fake as Big East contenders" dance. How annual? 2010 dropping opener to Syracuse. 2009 getting doubled up by Cincinnati in second game followed by a 41-14 mash out by Pitt. 2008 raned tenth losing to Pitt as double digit favorites. 2007 losing to Rutgers after beating West Virginia and getting up to second in the nation.

So I should have seen this coming before I picked them but oh Skip Holtz I thought you would be different. Perhaps it is just a Pitt problem, a team South Florida has not beaten since the 2007 regular season finally. They'll need to regroup with their bye week before taking on a UConn team that has no identity. My whining is over, I'm not mad USF and I'm not even disappointed, you are who you are. It was my fault for getting into bed with you.

On a more positive note we've got good friend of the program Russ Mitchell back on the Fetch Friday Bonus Podcast (Ooooh OoooOOOH!) to talk about the two biggest games of the weekend; Bama-Florida and Nebraska-Wisconsin. Over at College Football News Russ has got his take on the game where he thinks this is going to be a Bama Roll Tide Roll mash out affair not quite the tight slugfest I do. Special teams and defense should be crisp for both teams but how Florida and their edge based rushing attack get manhandled by Bama should be interesting to watch.

We go back and forth over the Tide and Gators game before getting to the "All Russell Wilson Everything" portion of the show where we talk about Wisconsin's machine and how Nebraska can stop them. Short answer? We don't really see that happening although if Jared Crick plays for the Huskers he'll give the "black skirts" as Russ calls them a mega-boost. If the player above isn't doing it for you just click here and get your Gators-Tide fix plus Huskers-Badgers and even a little Clemson discussion.

Now after this video on to the fetch, where stuff and things happen:

There is something that happened yesterday most folks likely don't care about but my friends and I had a lengthy debate over it so obviously we do. Here's the deal, UNC has renewed our series with East Carolina for the 2012 and 2013 season. I hate this.

Non-BCS Breakdown With Adam Nettina: Week Five

Written by Michael Felder on .

Adam Nettina, our guy for all things Non-BCS is back on the scene this week after a one week hiatus and that means the big guns are back out. Fresh off a week where Adam was doing some work for Go Mids after the Navy-Sakerlina game we've got six quality match ups to talk about plus your player of the week and our BCS Busters discussion. We kick off with our Utah State minute right up front as the BYU Cougars host the Aggies for a showdown of in-state foes.

Zach LineWe've also got another in-state game as Maryland hosts Towson and Adam pins this game as a possible upset. Hawaii taking on Louisiana Tech for what is possibly the WAC's deciding game and it is just the start of October. Bowling Green has shown themselves well but we'll see what West Virginia has for the Falcons. SMU-TCU wraps up our games for you to keep your eye on as June Jones and JJ McDermott look to really tax that Horned Frogs secondary in this Texas showdown. Zach Line of SMU is going to have to show up big on the ground for the Mustangs to have a real shot at upsetting TCU.

In our BCS Busters spot we say a farewell to Florida International, fresh off their visit into the promised land after beating UCF. Boise State holds their honored spot while TCU still remains as the most critical obstacle to the Broncos BCS hopes. Houston keeps winning football games and Adam throws a curveball with Temple who, while not undefeated, does represent a stronger MAC East than we've seen recently and if they run the table they might get into the discussion.

In our spotlight game of the week we've got the Service Academies taking the shine as Air Force takes on Navy in Annapolis. Kriss Proctor and Tim Jefferson square off in a battle of different styles ran quite efficiently. Navy is quite committed to getting back the Commander in Chief Trophy and that starts here for the Midshipmen.

ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Five

Written by Michael Felder on .

New ITBThis week we've got Andy Hutchins on the podcast, someone who I've been looking forward to working with for awhile and have grabbed the opportunity. Andy is the one of the managing editors of Alligator Army the great Florida website, he also patrols the mean streets of the blogosphere that is SBNation and is the new boss behind the BlogPoll. There were some technical difficulties that exhausted my audacity knowledge but the podcast is here and it is listenable which is more than it was after the initial recording.

Now on to the slate:

SMU-TCU
South Florida-Pitt
Mississippi State-Georgia
Auburn-South Carolina
Clemson-Virginia Tech
Texas A&M-Arkansas
Nebraska-Wisconsin
Alabama-Florida

Good games all over the nation this week and a lot to get into as the SEC, ACC and Big Ten all feature some highly ranked teams getting after it this weekend. We put TCU's secondary on upset alert against June Jones attack while South Florida has a shot to really prove they're legitimate contenders for the Big East title. In Athens and Columbia we have two SEC match ups that should be fun contests despite three of the four participants no longer living in the land of the ranked.

Clemson and Virginia Tech, at least on the surface right now, is the type of game the ACC has been hoping to see for awhile. Two of the football-centric schools in the Top 15 getting after it this weeked, we'll learn how for real the Hokies are and if Clemson can keep their momentum going. Hogs take on the Aggies in a new SEC West match up that we'll be seeing for the years to come.

ALL RUSSELL WILSON EVERYTHING plays this week in the first game where the Badgers will be facing their equals. Wisconsin has a lot of questions on the defensive side of the ball and Taylor Martinez can definitely cause problems if he gets loose on the edge. All in all the nation's eyes will definitely be upon Madison.

Finally we hit the Bama-Florida game. Much like Clemson-VT has climbed up the charts thanks to their early season performance this match up in Gainesville has become even more intriguing as Florida has proven themselves quite capable. The Tide poured it on against the Hogs but Muschamp's Florida team is equipped to stop the run. This game will be an absolute slugfest, a great one to watch.

Friday, It's So Fetch! Vol. 20

Written by Michael Felder on .

We're back at it again folks and as I typed the number "twenty" into the box at the post editor I thought wow, twenty weeks of bringing the fetch and that includes our awesome Royal Wedding coverage that was the second week of this party. We're not nearly as fancy today but we are so super awesome it makes up for it.

Kicking your Friday off with some super serious podcasting thanks to the friend Chris Bahn who joined me to talk Hogs vs Tide on this special Bonus Edition of the ITB Podcast. Yes, that means the sound from "Baby Mama" is in there. Chris is the editor of Arkansas Sports 360 and so we really attack this game for 20 minutes. No fluff, no cute storylines talk. Just the nuts and bolts of the match ups from an offensive and defensive standpoint. How the Hogs will handle Alabama's exotic pressures that we know are coming. How the Tide defense will respond to Bobby Petrino finally opening up the playbook. Basically all your football talk that you need is right here and you will get no better break down as we talk scripts, the way both teams have been vanilla in early contests, the subtle issue of Petrino needing to finally beat Saban and, to this bloggers delight, SPECIAL TEAMS!!

If the box doesn't work for you folks download the podcast by clicking here and get this show in your earholes. WOOO PIG SOOIE folks. In keeping with the Allman Brothers roll that we've been on enjoy this classic:

Now it is time to get into a little discussion of what All Russell Wilson Everything is about and the NC State Wolfpack after their embarrassing performance last night against the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Non-BCS Breakdown: Week Four

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITB PodcastWe've got Jeremy Mauss on the podcast today. Jeremy joins us from the MWC Connection and he is sitting in for our regular co-host Adam Nettina. Jeremy's well suited to talk about the realm of the Non-BCS and that's exactly what we do here every Thursday on the Non-BCS Breakdown. The format is the same as we give you a few games that should be on your radar, talk about a player to watch this weekend, hit on the BCS Busters and then discuss our Spotlight Game of the Week.

San Diego State and Michigan is an interesting match up as the Wolverines will certainly be made aware of the abilities of Brady Hoke's former squad. In Toledo the Syracuse Orangemen will be tasked with leaving the Rockets disappointed again, but Toledo is a ball club capable of winning this football game with their explosive offense. Boise State takes on a Tulsa club playing their third Top Ten team in four games. Tulsa does boast our player to watch Bryan Burnham a junior wide receiver who is taking advantage of his increased burn.

In our BCS Busters segment we bid farewell to UCF who lost to FIU last weekend then talk about how Houston can make a push to raise up in the rankings as they have a schedule that can help them end up at 12-0 come the end of the regular season. Boise State obviously remains on the list seeing as they just can't lose. In our Spotlight Game of the Week Jeremy and I get into UCF-BYU in a game where both teams are limping off losses and desperately need a win to repair their psyches.

ITB's Slate of Eight: Week Four Edition

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBThis week I'm sitting proudly atop the ITB Pick'em Pool with a robust 19-5 record. That is sole possessor of first place because I am all about winning. To see if the success continues we've got one of my good friends Chip Patterson on the Slate of 8 to talk about the week's biggest games and give you some insight into the CFB world. Chip's from CBS's Eye on College Football Blog and he not only gives us his thoughts on this week's Slate but he also waxes all philosophical like on the expansion issue that we're currently dealing with.

We've stalled you long enough folks, here is the Slate for the fourth week of the season:
Notre Dame-Pitt
Southern Cal-Arizona State
Central Florida-BYU
Mizzou-Oklahoma
Florida State-Clemson
LSU-West Virginia
Arkansas-Alabama
Oklahoma State-Texas A&M

Chip and I run down all the games and spend plenty of time hitting on the heavy hitter games involving the four ranked opponents. As always with Chip the show is fun and definitely well worth a listen.

ESPNWilliamsport Talking Conference Expansion And More

Written by Michael Felder on .

Greg Little vs PittI came out of the weekend settling in to the idea of Pitt and Syracuse nestling in the ACC for the time being and what better way to snap me into the mix than with a radio spot? That's what we've got here as the folks up at ESPN Williamsport had me on their afternoon show to talk about the ACC's new additions as well as the entire realignment dance. We get into the move for the ACC and how that expansion is going to ultimately benefit both the league and the individual teams in this new climate of utter chaos.

Of course you cannot have expansion talk without discussing Texas, Texas A&M and the entire Big XII mess that we've got on our hands. Texas looks towards the Pac-12 as the Sooners and Longhorns appear to be working in concert again as the move looks to be go west by the twosome with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in tow. Sidenote "King of Wishful Thinking" by Go West is an awesome karaoke song.

I get a chance to talk about a team that has not been discussed that much on the podcast; Penn State, as we wrap up the show. The Nittany Lions have been unimpressive, they don't have the bodies that other, elite, teams have and they just finished struggling through a win over Steve Addazio's Temple Owls. Things are not good. Much like Florida State got stuck in a holding pattern from a development and recruiting standpoint during the end of the Bowden Era, the folks at State College are in a similar situation.

In The Bleachers Podcast: Oklahoma vs Florida State

Written by Michael Felder on .

Willie HaulsteadWe've got Ohio State and Miami this weekend plus LSU and Mississippi State on the tube tonight but there main course of the casual and die hard college football fan alike is in Tallahassee. The top ranked Oklahoma Sooners travel across the country to the capital of Florida to take on the Seminoles. Florida State enters as the fifth ranked team but they are also a 3 or 3.5 point underdog depending on who you pull your lines from. This game is the return trip for the Sooners who hosted Florida State and thoroughly spanked the bottoms of the young Noles team 47-17.

To preview this game we get two of the best from each camps; Bud Elliott for the FSU side from Tomahawk Nation and Allen Kenney of Blatant Homerism and the sweet blog The Crystal Ball Run. I play a little moderator here as the two factions square off in a solid discussion we kick off by discussing the hoopla surrounding the game.

Next we get into the match ups of the game and discuss what really matters, you know, on the field play. When Florida State has the ball watch for how OU defends against some designed quarterback runs, something they have struggled with in the past and an ace Jimbo Fisher has kept up his sleeve thus far. When OU has the ball look for one of the nation's best QB-WR combo, Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles, to really tax the Florida State defense and their discipline.

To wrap up we go a little rapid fire as Bud and Allen take their time talking about players that have a chance to stand out, guys who need to make a play, what the key to an OU win is, how FSU can position themselves to win the ball game and what is their most intriguing part of the special teams facet for this game. Yes. We made sure to work in special teams.

Non-BCS Breakdown: Week Three Edition

Written by Michael Felder on .

ITBPodcastThe Holy War is on this week folks as the BYU Cougars play host to the Utah Utes in a game where the Cougars look, again to get their stumbling offense on track and the Utes hope to rebound from their loss to new Pac-12 mate Southern Cal. On the show to kick off all the action is Adam Nettina our resident expert on all things Non-BCS. Adam will be down at the Navy-South Carolina game this weekend watching the Midshipmen for Go Mids and the great Navy site The Birddog. There is plenty of action to get into aside from the Holy War and game in Columbia so we dive right into it all.

To go with Navy-Sakerlina we've got a big Sun Belt versus Conference USA match up pitting two schools looking to rise in the ranks down in Florida; FIU hosts UCF in a game that should be quite exciting. Northwestern faces an Army squad that needs to get on the winning track quickly while 0-2 Colorado takes on 2-0 Colorado State in a game where the winless club is likely better than the undefeated bunch. A little BCS/Non-BCS role reversal for Adam's upset special where Washington State can upset a San Diego State team with MWC Champions hopes on their minds.

In that same game where Adam picks Washington State we'll get a look at the nation's leading rusher, Ronnie Hillman of SDSU. We get to cross two teams off our BCS Busters list while my guys, Houston, are still holding strong. BYU-Utah should be on everyone's radar and that is why it is our spotlight game of the week.
